Dr. John O'Leary

 

John V. O’Leary, Ph.D. is a licensed Psychologist-Psychoanalyst who is in practice on the Upper West Side of Manhattan. He sees a wide variety of adult patients who suffer from anxiety, depression, and other sources of stress. He's devised a unique treatment protocol for depressed patients, which involves a holistic approach.

He also specializes in career development and psychological assessment. Dr. O'Leary focuses on helping his clients find the most appropriate career choices, as well as aiding in mid-life career transitions. He has assisted a wide range of professionals, especially those in the legal and financial professions around issues of improving performance and maximizing strengths. He has given many career workshops on the Myers Briggs type Indicator and the Strong Interest Inventory. He is founder of Life Cycle Testing, a multi-purpose psychological assessment firm.

Dr. O'Leary is also a faculty member and supervisor of psychotherapy at the William Alanson White Institute and a supervisor at Teacher’s College, Columbia University, where he works with doctoral students in counseling. On staff at Columbia Presbyterian Hospital, he leads psychotherapy groups for severely depressed patients. He also services a full-time private practice on Manhattan’s Upper West Side. He has published articles in Psychoanalytic Psychology and Contemporary Psychoanalysis on depression, narcissistic, and borderline disorders. His most recent article, Putting it Together While Falling Apart appeared in the October Issue of Contemporary Psychoanalysis of 2008 (Vol.44, No.4). He has published chapters in several books on themes as diverse as paranoia, the nature and consequences of living in virtual reality, and running a gay men’s bereavement group during the time of AIDS.  Many of these topics were presented as papers at Division 39 meetings of the American Psychological Association. He has a Ph.D. in Psychology from St. John’s University granted in 1976.
